How to use it
- Write your goal, target amount and the dates you start and aim to finish.
- Divide your target by 20 and write that figure in "Each square is worth". It is the value of each square on the chart.
- Each time you add to your savings, log the date, where it came from and the amount, then update the running total.
- Colour in a square whenever your running total reaches the next step.
- When the chart is full, you have reached your target. Celebrate, then start a new goal.
About this household template
Write down what you are saving for and the amount you want to reach, then log each amount you put aside and colour in a square as you move towards your target. This free printable has a goal box, twenty progress squares to colour and a log with columns for the date, where the money came from, the amount added and a running total. A worked example with made-up figures shows how it fills in. Download it as Word to type into, or as a PDF to print. It records your own figures and does not give financial advice.
Questions
Is this financial advice?
No. It is a record-keeping aid. For free, impartial guidance on saving, see MoneyHelper or GOV.UK.
Where do I keep the money?
That is up to you. The tracker only records what you intend to save. Where you hold the money is a separate decision, and the guidance sites can help you compare options.
Can I track more than one goal?
Yes. Print a page for each goal and write a different name at the top.
Why twenty squares?
Twenty squares gives you a visible step every 5% of your target. You can divide your target by any number you like and colour in as many squares as suit your goal.
