How to use it

  1. Write your child's name, one goal and the reward at the top.
  2. Print the chart and put it somewhere your child can see it, such as the fridge or their bedroom door.
  3. Add a sticker, stamp or colouring-in straight away each time the goal is met.
  4. When the chart is full, give the reward you agreed, and make a fuss.
  5. Start a new chart with a new goal.

About this household template

This free printable pack has two versions. The 20-square chart suits most children, and the 12-square big chart has larger squares for toddlers and big stickers. Both have a space to write one goal and the reward your child is working towards. They are plain on purpose, with no heavy colour, so they are light on ink and your child can decorate the squares themselves. Download as Word to type a name and goal, or as a PDF to print straight away. A worked example shows a chart part-way through.

Questions

What goal should I put on a sticker chart?

Pick one small thing and say it positively, such as "Put my shoes on" rather than "Stop dawdling". One goal at a time works best.

What age is a sticker chart for?

Most children from about two or three enjoy them. Use the big-square version for the youngest and the 20-square one as they get older.

Does the reward have to be a treat?

No. Time together, choosing the film or a trip to the park can be as motivating as a toy.

How can I print it cheaply?

Print in black and white. The charts are mostly white space, so they use very little ink.
