How to use it

  1. Fill in the details at the top: moving date, both addresses, who is moving you and any key handover times.
  2. Start at "8 weeks before" and work down the list. If you have less time, begin at the heading that matches your timeline and catch up on the earlier ones.
  3. Tick each job as you finish it, and use the spare boxes to add anything specific to your move.
  4. Use the change of address checklist alongside it, and tick each organisation once you have told them.
  5. Take the page with you on moving day and keep it in your essentials bag.

About this household template

This free moving house checklist works through your move in stages: eight weeks before, four weeks, two weeks, one week, the day before, moving day and the days after. Each stage has tick boxes and spare lines for your own tasks, and there are boxes at the top for your moving date, both addresses and who is helping. The second download is a change of address checklist, so you can keep track of every bank, supplier and service you have told. Both come as a Word file you can type into, and a PDF to print.

Questions

How far ahead should I start planning a move?

Eight weeks gives you room to book removers, sort belongings and arrange services without rushing. If your move is sooner, start at the heading that matches your timeline and work forwards.

Who do I need to tell when I move house?

Most people tell their bank, insurers, employer, council, doctor and utility suppliers, and anyone who sends them post. Our change of address checklist lists the usual ones. On GOV.UK you can update your address with HMRC and DVLA and register to vote at your new address.

What should I keep with me on moving day?

Keep passports, keys, medication, phone chargers, wallets and anything you cannot replace in a bag you carry yourself rather than packing it on the van.

Is this checklist legal or financial advice?

No. It is a memory aid. Your tenancy agreement, sale contract and supplier terms set out what you must do and when, so check those or ask the person handling your move.
